how's your winter?

from Myoung Ho Lee's Photography-Act: Tree #3 via {NPRradiopictures}
......

gosh it's a winter wonderland here these days. pretty snow everywhere, and to be honest, everyone at our little home is so happy it see it / play in it / gaze out at the white-ly loveliness of it. me included.

i've been taking things slowly on the blogging front these days. working on a series of other projects.
thanks for your patience, loves.

how's the winter where you are, sweeties?

white space

............
welcome back wondersouls.

hope your time since we last met has been filled with wonderful community, great sharing & fresh new goodness. i'm so thankful mine has.

well we're already almost one month into our brand new year, and i wonder .... how are you doing?

after the promise the calendar brings of open-ended possibility each year - sometimes around mid-january i begin to feel the weight of not having left myself enough good, open, *white space* in life.

you know white space - the part of the page we choose to leave blank and unmarked:  those necessary, intentional, quiet, blank breathing spaces we all need to make room for in our daily lives? somehow i've filled up my pages again this year. alas.

so i ask:

ARE YOU LEAVING ENOUGH WHITE SPACE?

the good news is: (at least for me)
it's not too late, sweeties.
we can still choose to put that healthful space in our lives each day. here's to that.

the facebook resister

are you on facebook, nicies?
(shhh...i'm not.)

so it's IPO time in facebook world today!
but this week marks a more personal milestone of sorts in the land of facebook-ing.

the fact is, as of this morning,  i'm down to just one other real live friend in the world, of my generation, who is also NOT on facebook.
we'll miss you here in the dark ages, lovely a.

alas. :)

yes. i'm a facebook resister.

but i'm all for everyone else loving it.
& don't get me wrong: i love facebook. afterall , they commissioned me to handmake their Christmas party ornaments for them! i'm forever grateful! (gotta love huge corporations that appreciate handmade!)

and facebook connects pretty much all of my beloved ones together. and you know how i love community building.

i think i'm just a wee bit too private for it all.

i read yesterday that 2 out of every 5 north american adults are NOT on facebook. seems hard to believe there are that many of us out there. :)

anyone... ?
anyone... ?

how about you: facebook yay or nay?
& don't worry: i'll always *FRIEND* you here nicies. facebook or no facebook!
have a superfriendly weekend!

november brown

:: beautiful november browns ::

...........................

everywhere here is brown.
autumny, foliage dying grass-is-brown, tall-weeds-in-the-park  brown, leaf-less-trees brown.
brown.

and i suspect most folks don't like it much.
with its hidden raison d'etre meaning: *winter is coming.*
the acknowledgement that the beautiful technicolour autumn of gold & red & orange has long-since had its heyday here.

but i think it's just gorgeous.
absolutely goldeny-brown gorgeous.
cause hey - sometimes the beauty's in the in between parts of life, right?

do you love november brown?
{ps: happy thanksgiving to our dear friends in the US today -
feeling grateful for all you nicies! }

the *bought* halloween costume

..............

last week little rikrak sat us down.
we could tell by his serious demeanor that this was important stuff.

"mom...." (he nods knowingly toward me)
"dad...." (he gestures to mr. rikrak)

(i'm beginning to sense he may have practiced the speech in the mirror a few times..)
he draws in a BIG, deep breath.
"this year i want a *bought* halloween costume."
and so goes the funny tale of being a handmaking-obsessed mom.

parents, aunts, uncles, friends of wee ones ... you know how it is...  since the time little rikrak was born we've tried to make him fun homemade halloween costumes. he's been an array of cute painstakingly-sewn together outfits, and a mix of practically-stapled-together-at-the-last-minute-as-we-fly-out-the-door DIYers. and now... he's wanting to show his own personality by choosing a store-bought outfit. love it.

life's funny that way, huh?

well after oodles of far-too-gory hunts at the shops last week, we finally all agreed on a fun costume. he had the great idea to add a few creative, personalized touches (that-a-boy!) and the finished look is a fabulous one!

how do you feel when your little handmade-raised cuties long for store-bought goodness?
i'll confess - i think we all yearn for a little something *bought* sometimes.
i know i do, as much as i adore handmade.
& i'm wisely reminded today:  *all things in moderation.*

{ ps: the mommy in me thinks it so sweet & adorable he was concerned how we'd take it! }
happy parenting,  halloween cuties!

confession: i just can't knit.
honest.

5 different times.
over 20 years.
to no avail.

many friends have tried to show-me-the-ropes, too.
but i just can't knit.

i so admire knitters.
that lightning-speed way you can knit, purl, drop a stitch, increase, cast on ... make amazing things magically appear from a simple yarn.
it's all a secret mathematical language to me!
AND... aren't knitters phenomenal multi-taskers? knitting while visiting, knitting while watching a concert, knitting while bathing, knitting while exercising (i've seen it done!) ... wow!

how about YOU & knitting - yay or nay?
have an artform you just can't seem to master?

join my club. :)

i'll just have to sit back and admire!

.....................

what if your number of Etsy shop sales (or artfire shop sales, or... etc)  was translated into a year?

we've all been there. at 0. year 0.
waiting waiting for that 1st sale.

and then yay! it happens.
and it's 1.
and hopefully it builds and builds and eventually we get to numbers we at one time only dreamt of.
ah, life's like that, isn't it!

ten. one hundred. etc.

well that's the happy case for me.

and then this time last year my my sales were about to cross over with my own living years. funny!

last i reached 1969 sales in my rikrak etsy shop.
and i thought to myself... .1969 - i love that number...what a great year!
i wrote about it here.

now i'm at 2745... some unfathomable date in the future! (cue wacky space music!)
oh the fantastical things that number makes me think about...

so i asked around to some other lovely handmade sellers ... what does your sales #, translated into a calendar year, bring to mind!
here are what some of your wrote last year.

for example:

rikrak:
last year i was at 1969:
what a great a groovy year!

john lennon records *give peace a chance* in the montreal bed-in.
the first human lands on the moon.
the brady bunch premieres.
& woodstock shook the world.

or now i'm at
2745
... in 2745 i'm hoping for a peaceful, quiet, space-agey world with humankind having learned how to co-exist happily.
(and we all make arts and crafts and play games all day!)
and just for fun, i'm predicting pale tones rule the colour palette and  humans can gracefully zoom around flying.  we've all decided to slow things down and spend more time talking & laughing together then fighting & complaining. cheers to that!

.............

so here's what some other fabulous sellers had to say about their sales/year! reflections from the past, or predictions into the future! (we can all dream to be there, can't we?!)

.............................................

my year is 1507. the year the mona lisa was completed. kinda cool.

.................

665
Back in 665 people were going through their own version of "Y2K"... but more like "Y2-666" :)... They were pretty terrified to enter the Year of the Beast! On Dec 31st, they counted down 10, 9, 8... worrying that all the candles would get blown out and not re-ignite... 7, 6, 5, scared that all the cows would go dry... 4, 3, 2, petrified that the ground would open them up and swallow them whole... 1!!!!! 666 came and went...everyone was ok. Then they all partied like it was 1999.

Party!

 ...............

I'd see my sales year of 3533 in 2 ways. The 1st being more of a reality, the 2nd being a hope for the future. Realistically I envision a landscape much like I picture Arizona to be. Wide open dust bowls, tumble weeds, roadrunners. What I would hope for though? I boom of life reminiscent of New Zealand. Lush, giant, overrun and full of brand new possibilities :)

................

Well, I am still a long ways back, but...in that year the Roman Empire was given control of the Eastern Empire and Maximinus Thrax or Maxumimus I (Roman Emperor) was born. I am not sure exactly how that helps, but I think it just means that I am off to a great start and only more good can come! Thanks for the fun!

................

 maria : 683
Hmmm, not easy to find events in the year 683 - though I did find this interesting:

The first uses of a "goose-egg" sign for zero appear about this time in Cambodia and Sumatra, although the Chinese had long used an empty space as a placeholder and later Mesopotamian numeration also used a sign as a placeholder; it is not clear when zero comes to be understood as a number and not just a placeholder.

 ................

I am currently in the year 68.
In the year 68 AD Nero, the Roman Emperor, committed suicide. Yeesh!
On a lighter note, the Gospel of Mark was likely written.
Can't wait to get to the year 100!

......

In 425 AD, the Roman empire was headed to its end - But that's okay, because the Byzantine era came next, and it was pretty cool, too.

........

coreymarie : 150

I'm only at 150, but that's pretty exciting! 150 AD was a time of atlases, paper and, ooh, "geocentric cosmology" which is deliciously nerdy.

...........

vadjutka : 213
I would be in 213 AD ....maybe in Rome, under the rule of Emperor Caracalla...or maybe in China, I would be Cao Cao, the prime minister of the Han dinasty :-)))

................

off the hooks: now 279

I had a strange coincidence back (last) September when my shop sales hit 80 on the same day that my grama turned 80. I also realised that day that my first etsy front page was 08/08/08!! I wrote a little blog post about it, i was so excited:

.............

44 BC:

Julius Caesar, Dictator of the Roman Republic, is stabbed to death by Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus, Decimus Junius Brutus and several other Roman senators on the Ides of March!

44 AD:

Nuttin...nuttin happened, at least no one blogged about it on their slates and that's why I couldn't find anything!

Time to keep making sales so I can catch up the the British Invasion of the 60's!!!

......................

hahaha. I only have 44 sales at the moment so.......
Sep 2nd BC - Pharaoh Cleopatra VII of Egypt declares her son co-ruler as Ptolemy XV Caesarion.

Sep 2nd BC - The first of Cicero’s Philippics (oratorical attacks) on Mark Antony. He will make 14 of them over the next several months.

Mar 15th BC - Julius Caesar, Dictator of the Roman Republic, is stabbed to death by Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus, Decimus Junius Brutus and several other Roman senators on the Ides of March.

Whoo hoo! Crazy year!

............

Year 1348 (MCCCXLVIII)

Oh no, my year was not a good year, The Black Death was running rampant, this must explain the black cloud over my head. Gotta sell something to remove this cursed plague! : )

......................

okee dokee!
so there are some fabulous etsyans, marking various wonderful years with their sales!

how about you?

what # are you at and what does that year make you think of?
come play!
