well ... one of my favourite folks in the world is visiting this week from new york city. so in honour of great friends, i thought we'd pay homage to that great destination: NYC and one of it's beautiful handmade sister cities, hungary's capital: budapest

gosh i've loved spending many-a-fun excursion in new york over the years - it is CERTAINLY one of my favourite cities i've ever been to: the fabulous architecture, the amazing artistic scene, the vibrant handmaking communities and the endless plethora of inspiring ideas on every city block!

i've not yet been to budapest, but goodness: when i hear friends talk of this beautiful city, i just can't wait for the day to explore it myself! i think these two cultural hotspots are well paired: both so alive with living history, great art, fabulous architecture & amazing artists.

so happy handmaking to budapest & nyc!

tokyo, japan & rome, italy

all of japan has been on our collective thoughts of late, so in this sister cities edition we pay homage to some of the fabulous handcrafters from the tokyo region and her sister city of rome!

two cities that i just plain adore, i love tokyo & rome for their rich artistic histories, the amazing architecture, the yummy culinary crafting, the beautiful handmaking cultures and gosh: so very very much more!

i look forward to the day when the whole family rikrak can visit both of these amazing cities again.

mr. rikrak and i honeymooned in rome many moons ago, and just adored it. 
and tokyo: well it's a longtime dream to just plain live there!

shanghai, china & montreal, canada

in honour of chinese new year coming up this week, i thought we'd pay tribute to one of china's beautiful handmaking cities: the lovely shanghai, and one of her fabulous sister cities: montreal. while i haven't had the chance to visit shanghai yet, i've heard from many dear friends of the beautiful handicrafting traditions alive & well in there.

and as luck would have it, i've enjoyed visiting beautiful montreal many many times, to enjoy the amazing arts & culture so vividly abundant in this city. i think these two cultural hotspots are well paired: both so alive with living history, great art, fabulous architechture & amazing artists.

delightfully, the family rikrak has just moved very close to the wonderful city of toronto! we're so excited about this, for so many reasons, among them, the fabulous array of arts & cultural happenings in this fair fair city!

so today, while i update my own co-ordinates {changing my shop & twitter locale to toronto - ish seems surreal!}  i thought i'd showcase some of my new handmaking neighbours from toronto, and pair them with one of toronto's official sister cities, the great handmaking city of chicago, illinois.

i think these two supercities are well paired: 

when i think of both, they evoke the thoughts of great museums & galleries, a fabulous array of diverse & delicious gastronomic superstars, and wonderful places to embrace diversity, champion uniqueness and celebrate community!

so yay to toronto & chicago for that!

bangkok, thailand & washington, dc, usa

reading the news of late, it's with a heavy heart that i see the turmoil and strife that beautiful Thailand is coping with these days. a few years ago, mr.rikrak & i called Thailand home for while, and it is without a doubt my favourite place to visit in the
whole wide world.

so today's sister city post is a big hug to all of our dear friends there, and a big *fingers crossed* that peace will come again soon to that area.

i've been lucky to have spent time in both of today's capital cities, and love them both. what especially stands out to me today about the similarity of bangkok & washington are the
a) amazing architectural wonders and b) the fantastic history alive in both cities.

and i think you'll just love the creative makings by both featured here today!

san francisco, usa

seoul, south korea

these are two cities i just adore.

san fransisco i've visited years ago on a wonderful family trip. what a vibrant, fabulous place. such great neighbourhoods, fabulous vistas, great people, & truly great arts & crafting!

and seoul, a city i lived near for about a year many moons ago.

oh seoul! i have so many fond memories of my almost daily trips into into town that year to meet up with

mr. rikrak for darling date picnics @ one of the many beautiful historical palaces in that great city...and so many great neighbourhoods in seoul, too! and such great handmaking!

so yay to sisters, sister cities, and the wonderful handmaking sisterhood who create
@ the heart of each city.
