there's a special magic in creating pure beauty from things broken.
in life.
in learning.
in art.
the fabulous juliet of *the broken plate pendant co.* crafts her beautiful magic with every gorgeous piece of recycled plate jewelry she creates.
each little shard of broken pottery, china, porcelain meticulously comes alive as a featured treasure in her amazing recycled & reclaimed works, and to me, she's an eco magician.
a visit to her lovely lovely world and i know you too will be captivated by this superstar. her ability to give new life to old plates and "transform broken pieces of a shattered family dish or wedding plate into wearable heirlooms" with her custom work is pure eco magic; reusing and recyling magic, at it's beautiful best!
thanks for showing us the *lovely* in future-friendly making, broken plate! you can catch up with her in her lovely shop, her wonderful blog, on twitter & on facebook.
and thought you might like a glimpse into some of beautiful pottery she collects, but DOESN'T break! :)
who (are you) : Bio here
what (are you collecting) : Vintage and handmade mugs
when (did you start) : 5 years ago
how (many do you have?): 20 or so
where (do you find them) : Thrifting, Etsy and craft shows
where (do you keep them) : I have them in rotation in my kitchen
what (‘s a crazy/interesting story behind one) : I bought my first handmade mug at a ceramics sale at my college 5 years ago. Before then, I never really thought about what I drank my coffee from (and didn’t drink nearly as much coffee.) The mug was signed by a ceramics professor that I did not really know because I never took ceramics. The next semester I took a stained glass class being taught by the same teacher that made the mug. I am still using the processes that he taught me to make my jewelry now.
what (piece would you like to add): There are SO MANY that I want to add. Right now I am stalking Pinkkiss Pottery and Van Wagoner Studios for the perfect addition.
why (do you love them) : My 2 favorite times of day are morning coffee and afternoon coffee. Sometimes that is the only time that I can just sit for a minute. Honestly, I break plates for jewelry because I love ceramics. Mugs are a way for me to express my love of ceramics without breaking them.
which (one is your favourite) & why : Right now, I have three favorites, all made by Justin Rothshank which I purchased at The American Craft Council Show this February.
what (else do you collect) : I collect a ton of plates to break. I have no room in my house to collect anything else.

Something I recycle, well, we do the regular recycling of glass/plastic and paper, but something much more fun is searching the beautiful beaches here on PEI for pieces of beach glass and old pottery that have washed up on the shore, and making jewelry out of them!
ReplyDeleteluv2have at gmail dot com
Great prize! I really enjoy your shop. The ones with the three little circles really catch my eye (I have no idea how you punch circles out of ceramic) but my fave is this red plate with blossoms on it - a beautiful shade of red.

Something I recycle... Here in Toronto it's very easy to recycle because every public garbage bin is also a recycling bin. But something peculiar? For my Etsy shop I recycle salvaged bottle caps into painted pendants.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to make use of broken ceramics.
ReplyDeleteI particularly like the Purple Vintage Ship Broken Plate Pendant. The vintage look appeals to me and the ship design looks almost 3-dimensional.

It sounds like something I would do. I bought a couple of incense burner holders in Kauai a few years ago and made necklaces out of them. So I really enjoy the thimble idea. Plus I sew. So.
At Sylvia-Louise Handbags we try to utilize and repurpose as much as we can. Our appliques are made from fabric scraps. And we created a whole new line of accessories---headbands and cuffs out of all the residual fabric we have collected over the years.

I love the multi-colored bracelet. And the idea of turning plates into pendants - I've worked in a antique shop and the broken china doesn't sell. Great way to up-cycle!!

2. I like to recycle paper items , glass , but plasticis the one that is difficult to recycle .
ReplyDeleteI also like it when companies make their products with metal , glass , biodegradable , or recyclable containers but not plastic .

ReplyDeleteSeems I am a recycler. I reuse plastic zip bags...just wash and reuse; I use plastic store bags for in wastebaskets; I keep envelopes and reuse them to post things as well using new lables to cover old or turning tyvek envelopes inside out. If the stamps haven't been canceled, I remove them and reuse them as well! Etc etc....
ReplyDeleteI love this necklace: http://www.etsy.com/listing/42706062/sterling-silver-simple-circle-recycled-c

In addition to recycling glass, plastic, paper, etc. through the community recycling program, I try to reuse paper and packaging materials as much as possible, and to reuse old clothes and fabrics, often for toys or bedding for my dog.

I recycle paper towels! No one else in the family can figure out why I would do that.
ReplyDeleteAnd we recycle plastic bags if we have any. We train Guide Dog puppies and need plastic bags when we are out and about training.
