collections: with en route

i just love seeing what folks are collecting. i guess i kind of feel it tells us just a little bit about what inspires them, what they love, and what they choose to surround themselves with in their home. today, i'm delighted to present the next in the rikrak studio's collections series: 11 & a 1/2 quick questions with a wonderful artist on what they're collecting, (apart from their art supplies! ) hope you'll just love: vintage crate labels: with the lovely Elizabeth of en route.

who (are you?) :Elizabeth (of En Route)

what (are you collecting?) : Vintage crate labels from the 1920s ~ 40s.

when (did you start?) : 6 months ago.

how (many do you have?) : 4 so far.

where (do you find them?) : At antique shops in tiny, rural CA towns.

where (do you keep them?) : They are propped up around my bedroom for now, to be hung up on the walls once I find some vintage frames to go with them.

what (‘s an interesting story behind one?) : The very first label I bought was the one for McCurdy Pears; I felt there was just something special about it. Afterwards a knowledgeable friend told me that it's very unusual to find a label depicting a night scene.

what
(piece would you like to add?) : I collect crate labels featuring CA fruit producers, and the next label I want is one for Paradise Apples (Paradise, CA is where generations of my family have lived).

why (do you love them?) : They are incredibly beautiful, detailed, nostalgic, and cheerful works of art that appeal to the graphic designer in me.

which (label is your favourite?) & why? : My favorite is the odd one out -- a chocolate label embossed with gold details. The scene is like something from an art deco dream world and I could stare at it for hours.

what (else do you collect?) : Demeter fragrances, tenugui, Japanese notebooks.
