{& 18 years as kissing friends?! wow.)

well national poetry month is coming to a close here in canada & in the usa.

married to a poet, i've a great fondness for aesthetic language.

and i just LOVE seeing little rikrak's eyes light up when we all read poems together. it's magic.

so i thought we'd have a little shindig here & link up to all things poetry-ish.

confessions: i'm a terrible, TERRIBLE baker

my actual electric mixer smoking!

it's true.

i might very well be the official world's worst baker.

you see, to know me, is to know that i'm a terrible terrible baker.{i like to call myself an *optimistic* baker: don't have an ingredient needed in the recipe? no worries: just substitute! )

no baking soda? how about more baking powder instead?! 

or

can't find the measuring spoons? how about i'll just estimate with the palm of my hand! 

or

the recipe SAYS it'll take 20 minutes but 10 will probably work, right?

apparently the science of baking doesn't LOVE creative substitutions as much as i do! hence,famously horrible cakes, hard-as-nails cookies, and pies you can use as doorstops!)

but does this stop me from baking?

of course not.

this week marks a baking high.

during the making of the official 2012 mr. rikrak birthday cake (a scrumptious vanilla cheesecake with chocolate lace accents) the electric beaters actually died.

here's the scene:

i combined the ingredients.

i began mixing.

the mixer smoked.

then it sparked.

then it died.

honest.

baking fireworks.

needless to say that when even the appliances call it quits, best i take a baking break.

RIP mixer.

so i'll leave all the great baking to you nicies!

until i feel like experimenting again... look out kitchen!

the much anticipated followup to his super dooper award-winning debut * Muybridge's Horse * has hit bookstands, and though i MAY :) be a wee bit biased, you're gonna want one!

man of letters

while i think that (luckily) this has become an antiquated term, today i'd like to cheer my own wonderful *man of letters*, mr. rikrak, who convocated (that may or may not be a real word :) this past weekend, and officially officially became -- dr. rikrak -- (or perhaps, mr. rikrak, Ph.D.) ! yay!

there is no finer scholar around in my book! so in honour, some handmade & vintage letters. i'm so proud of you, superstar! and it was so fun having our families in town for the ceremony (gosh i'm a sucker for the pomp & circumstance of a good ceremony! yay!)

{.... and on another note, i've always had a strange affinity for certain letters - know what i mean? of course *k* & *d* as they are vital parts of my name, but also *f* (oh how i loved to write cursive f's as a preteen!) and that lovely letter *e* - how about you - have some favourite letters? or is it just weird letter-loving me? hmmmm....

it's a happy happy time here in the rikrak home.

thanks so much to everyone who sent along their well-wishes, who crossed their fingers, and who sent goodwishes in the winds after my kissing friends post last week!

last friday, the lovely mr. rikrak defended his ph.d. thesis and woohoo... what a superstar he was! he was FABULOUS! and now.... he's all done that gosh-darned ph.d! {i always did have a thing for professors.. *sigh*)... & just like that i'm married to dr. rikrak!

i'm so proud of my sweetiepie. he was so eloquent, and dynamic and inspiring at the defense. you were fantastic, love. fan-tastic!

so here's to you, dr. rikrak.
gosh... you're amazing, love.
all that hard hard work sure paid off!

{& don't worry, i won't refer to him as dr. rikrak anymore.. but i thought for just one post it had a nice ring to it :) }

and hey..if you happen to be looking to hire a cute & fabulous english lit. professor for your college or university... let us know! :)
