celebrating women

a day, in my opinion,  to reflect on, celebrate, remember, dream of the wonderful inroads we've made as women around the world, and the paths we hope to yet build for all women around the world.

as the IWD site perhaps says it best: good things can come from celebrating
& working & thinking together:  awareness, change, equality

who are some amazing women you celebrate,
especially today?
peace lovelies.

the real life transformers

transformer screenprinted necktie by toybreaker

well well well.

here we are.
the last day of school for the little ones in ontario.
tomorrow it's sum-sum-summertime!

because the ads are EVERYWHERE, i know there is this mega-crazy franchise in hollywood called the transformers. i've never seen (and never will! it looks so scary & violent!! eek! is that really supposed to be a so-called "kids" movie?! heavens!) the movies, but because i was a kid in the 80's, i remember the basic idea: changing, morphing things; transforming into something else!

while i hope that we're not all "robots in disguise," (i guess you never know?! :) i can say i relate to this feeling, in abundance, of transformerly change of late. for me, there's this swell of talk in the cyberworld, at the park, in the grocery stores, about summer coming (it's here!) and the way so many of us, as adults, or children, morph into something else, especially this time of year. the real life transformers.

the transforming is varied: for folks with school-aged kids, the transition brings kids home all day, or off to camps, or perhaps a juggle in routines. maybe it brings college-aged folks home for a few months, or brings you yourself to a new home! maybe a change of pace at work. i've read many a great blog post this past week about finding balance in transitioning these days. it can be tough, whatever the season of transforming, can't it?

as a mommy who has a child in school for a couple of hours each afternoon, today is my last day with that little afternoon time to rikrakwork. our schedules change tomorrow, and while i know change can be a challenge sometimes, i'm really excited about the possibilities of a focal shift for 2 months. rikraking moves primarily to the night-shift. things move around a bit.

i know we all go thru this, at different times in our lives. transitioning, transforming, and though it can be a challenge, i think it's an amazing and adaptable spirit we all have.

so here's to the transformers we all are!
amazing and adaptable. for all the roles we all fill, day or night, here's a little cheer for you
- you can do it!

wishing you all balance and wellness and fun, whenever transitions come your way.
tell us about transitions going on these days in your own life,
and we'll keep you in our thoughts, nicies!
to the real transformers! hear hear!

great green-ies: each of us & earth hour!

greening.... i find it exciting and hopeful that while there sure are lots of terrible things going on to pollute & harm our planet, there are so many wonderful folks doing fabulous things to help make the world a greener, healthier place! so, the rikrak studio is happy to feature great green-ies : snapshots of amazing, inspiring. eco-forward-thinking folks from all sorts of fields and paths in the greening movement. some inspire by greening at home, or in their business; in their art or the larger world, or on many levels at once! i've asked each green-ie to suggest an easy eco-idea or tip we might all be able to add to our daily lives. today i'm honoured to present the next in this series!

i'm a great fan of the idea that we can each make a difference, in our own lives, to green the world: in our own homes, our own communities, our states & provinces and beyond! tomorrow marks a great way to join with millions around the world to show that we're serious about change for our planet!

the world wildlife federation (WWF) began the global initiative EARTH HOUR in 2007. on Saturday, March 28th, @ 8:30 PM YOUR LOCAL time, be sure to switch off your lights for one hour. the goal this year is to have 1 billion people turning off their lights!
while this symbolic action won’t stop climate change, i think it does show that individual actions are important and can add up to a make a great big difference.

at the rikrak home, we try to have fun lights out whenever we can. because it's good for the world, and because we think it's good for our soul! :) (and we all really like fun candlelight dinners!) ... and i'm so thrilled that this initiative is inspiring folks in more ways than just turning off their lights for an hour. even our Province of Ontario is encouraging all schools to turn off their lights today for an hour, so the kids can participate, too! good work!

so today's great green-ie tip:
turn out your lights for an hour tomorrow night @ 8:30 pm!

are you participating? if yes - let me know... i'm going to feature some participants in a followup post next week!
tell me what fun things you do in your own home to green!
have a great, green weekend, nicies!

(i'll be back sometime on the weekend to announce the winner of my giveaway! you can still enter til 9pm tonight!)
